Watering the vegetable garden: when and how much
Water deeply and less often rather than a little every day: roots go deeper and cope better with drought. Water in the morning and aim at the soil, not the leaves. Keep track of rainfall too, because after a good soaking you can skip a session.
How much
As a rule of thumb, US university extension services suggest about 1 inch (2.5 cm) of water a week from rain and irrigation combined, adjusted for soil and climate. Sandy soil needs watering more often; clay needs it less often but for longer.
In the app
The app takes account of recent rainfall in your area and adjusts your watering reminder to match.

Frequently asked questions
Morning or evening?
Morning: leaves dry quickly and plants go into the heat of the day well watered.
How do I know the soil is wet enough?
After watering, dig a small hole and see how far down the moisture goes.
Is drip irrigation worth it?
Yes: it puts water straight at the roots, cuts waste and keeps leaves dry.
