What to sow and plant in the vegetable garden in September?

Updated 4 November 2026 · By the Orto editorial team

In September, strawberries are still planted, in the August and September window, so they root before next year's crop. Garlic, broad beans and peas wait until October: in Valle d'Aosta garlic is October–November, and the RHS autumn sowing for broad beans is October or November.

Jobs for the month

Clear spent plants off the beds. Keep diseased ones off the compost and out of the garden, as in pests and diseases. Where the soil is not sodden, well-rotted compost on the beds that take garlic in October. Leave ground that is sodden or sticks to the spade. On strawberries just planted, water at the base and leave a gap in the mulch around the crown. In a pot the same drainage applies: see the container garden.

Every plant in the catalogue has its own sowing calendar, and weather alerts for your area help you judge whether to sow now or hold off.
